Garden Party

Do you know that Ricky Nelson song, "I went to a garden party, to reminisce with my old friends..."? That song runs through my head each Saturday Morning as I head to the Cache Valley Gardener's Market. Local fresh produce is the main attraction, and localvores come from all around (is that an oxymoron?) to support the Valley's Gardener's and Artisans. Maybe you'll you recognize some of these; maybe they Don't Look the Same.

A Couple More

These two are really troublesome: they're so good lookin', I can't choose!

Preview

This is a little snippet of the shoot we did with J. and A. It was a pleasure to spend a delightful evening making their portraits.

Louis Vuitton, of the Rendezvous

25 years of doing a thing makes one an expert--a chief, one could claim. K. has been handcrafting leather goods and clothing for many moons, and his mastery is shown in the quality of his work. With a little marketing, he could give certain European designers a run for their money. Look out: Fringe is back!

Nikon D90, 50mm lens, f/3.5, 1/200s and f/8, 1/40s, respectively, ISO 200.

Another World

I just had to post these. I thought at first that I was making pictures of flowers, but as I added more and more magnification to the lens, I started seeing more color and, of course, detail. The prismatic reflections on these wild irises were like a disco colored carpet for the micro insects living there. And the reds of the poppy were just...popping. Straight from the camera, no effects applied.

Nikon D90, 50mm lens with macro extension tubes, f/7.1, 1/800s, ISO 200 on the iris, and f/7.1, 1/200s, ISO 200 for the poppy.

Rendezvous

The Cache Valley Rendezvous doesn't disappoint. From pipe players and face paint to Chuck Wagons and buckskins: one could come away a bona fide mountain man (or woman) in a matter of hours!

World Wide Photo Walk

Make Tracks! On July 18th we will be joining Scott Kelby's World Wide Photo Walk. We'll get together and walk through Logan, UT creating photographs, learning from each other, and just having a good time. If you'd like, you can also participate in the day's contest and there are some terrific prizes available. For all the details, check it out here. Bring your camera and join the gang. See you there!

Bring on the Shadows

Light is Photography. But if there are no shadows, is there really light? If there is light, but there is nothing to be lit, does the light exist? If I am there, but the light is not, do I exist?

Who cares? Just post the photo. Nikon D90, 50mm lens, f/2.0, 1/640s, ISO 200.

Cache Valley Photographers

There is a new group for photographers in Cache Valley to get together to learn and share. It's free, and it's a great place to become a better photographer. Check it out here. All are welcome!

Krackel, Mr. Goodbar, Symphony...

The clarity of this lens always amazes me; but Hershey is too cool to be impressed. A pop of hand held flash from camera left brought light to L.'s face while the setting sun lit up her hair. Nikon D90, 50mm lens, f/1.8, 1/500s, ISO 1000 with an SB-600.

Feed me, Seymour

Again, no alterations, fresh from the camera. Nikon D90, 50mm lens, f/2.0, 1/400s & 1/2500s, respectively, ISO 640.

For Those About to Rock

It's a long way to the West if you leave from New Jersey, and twenty-something years in the Cache Valley hasn't extinguished the flair R. brought with him. He says it's different here ("Yeah, I mean, there were cows in the yard of my first apartment"). Nevertheless, his self proclaimed best feature has lasted all that time. We salute you.

Anytime, Anywhere

I was impressed that this father and daughter could have a meaningful discussion in a public park. Nikon D90, 50mm lens, f/5.6, 1/800s, ISO 200.

Dash

E. is four years old. I believe that four year olds playing soccer is more entertaining than adults playing soccer. That's probably because there are no Dads on the sidelines crowding ever closer as the game progresses. The kids all ran their legs off and had almost as much as we did. Nikon D90, 18-200mm lens at 135mm, 1/25s, ISO 200.

Ready

When K. graduates from high school she'll be starting a new life--her life.

She's confident and determined.

And she's ready.

...right?

Yeah, right.

Family Circus

These are three of the blurs in a family we shot the other day. These kids may be the answer to the world's energy crisis! We had a blast at Central Park, and there was no shortage of smiles to capture.

Roughage

For me, flower pictures are just flower pictures, and there's not much new too be done. Still, ya just can't help yourself sometimes. These photos are all raw from the camera without any color adjustments in the computer.

Normally, shooting down on flowers is boring because it is the same perspective that everyone sees when looking at flowers. However, the geometry in this first one was intriguing and and I tried to line up directly overhead. The sun was setting which made it a simple matter to keep my shadow out of the frame. The ultra short depth of field really makes those petals pop. The second photo is the same flower from a different perspective. Nikon D90, 50mm lens, f/1.8, 1/4000s, ISO 720, 360, respectively.

Something Different

These clouds were swollen with depth. One could almost feel the roiling power overhead. The storm that was leaving was soon followed by another. I used a wide lens setting to increase the sense of movement in the sky; then I got under cover. Nikon D90, 18-200mm VR lens at 18mm, f/5.6, 1/4000s, ISO 320, -1.66 EV.

Mother's Day Special

Gentlemen,
Mother's day is this week--don't forget!

Great Dane!

I met Dottie at the grocery store yesterday. She was a little shy, but she opened up eventually; good thing cameras are water resistant...

You're still young...

Mother's day is coming up, but this photo still deserved a place this week. Here we reduced the exposure to highlight the faces, and minimize the impact of the background lighting. Dad doesn't care about that, however; playing with E. is far more important. Nikon D90, 50mm lens, f/1.8.

Generation...Z?

Does A. know something Great-Grandpa V. doesn't? We captured this image while setting up for a family portrait during a family event. Nikon D90, 50mm lens, f/1.8.

Happy Engagement

M. and A. are getting married this summer, and we were privileged with shooting their engagement portraits. These two just look so happy together, and it's obvious they want to continue making each other happy. Sheesh! The hardest thing about this shoot was getting M. to stop looking at A. long enough for a picture.

An unexpected marathon created a hurdle for M. and A. getting to location in the morning, but we worked around it. A huge diffuser softened the harsh noonday sun and a reflector and flash helped fill in the spaces.

The light was bright and the wind was picking up so we stepped into the shade, placed a few reflectors and flashed up some stunning light.

M. and A. were a hoot! They have been joking about foregoing the formal reception in exchange for a backyard event. Maybe this'll help get them started...
