Whit, Great question. f/8, when focussed this closely should normally make things farther away out of focus. However, the focal length comes strongly into play here. That is, the 17mm that the lens is set to. Wide angle lenses make deeper depths of field. On this lens, everything that is more than about four feet away is in focus.
How come the aperture didn't make the background out of focus?
